INIA Sphera Review: How Its Five Modes Work and What They Feel Like

INIA Sphera Review: Five Modes - My Hands-On Experience

Before I started using the INIA Sphera, I wanted to understand more than its list of features. What does each mode actually do? Which ones need conductive gel? How strong does it feel? And how do you fit the treatments into a skincare routine?

This INIA Sphera review combines my early hands-on experience with an explanation of the device’s five modes. I am currently using Level 1, the starting intensity, and there is already a noticeable difference between the sensations of the treatments.

This is an early-use review. I can describe the treatment experience now, but I am still evaluating changes in my skin over time.

What Is Microcurrent, and How Does It Work?

Microcurrent is a form of electrical stimulation that uses very small currents, generally measured in microamperes. Facial devices apply current through electrodes, usually with a conductive medium between the device and the skin.

That medium matters: a conductive gel helps establish electrical contact and lets a handheld device glide comfortably. The product used during treatment is part of the routine, rather than just something added to make the skin slippery.

Microcurrent is often discussed alongside electrical muscle stimulation, or EMS. However, the terms do not describe exactly the same thing. EMS is used to stimulate muscle contractions; low-level microcurrent may produce little sensation. A device combining technologies can therefore feel quite different from a device using microcurrent alone.

Why Can You See Your Muscles Twitch?

Electrical stimulation can activate nerves that cause muscles to contract. This helps explain the visible movement I notice during LIFT treatment. In my experience, the sensation feels like the device grabs and lifts the skin while the muscles underneath move.

What Does the Research Tell Us?

A small split-face study of facial neuromuscular electrical stimulation found changes in muscle thickness and facial contours after eight weeks. However, it involved a different device and treatment method—not the INIA Sphera. Research on electrical stimulation helps explain the technology, but it cannot be used as proof that every home device delivers the same results. [3]

What Is the INIA Sphera?

The Sphera is a handheld facial device with five selectable treatment modes. In my routine, I think of LIFT, RF-TI, and A-SHOT as the main treatments, with INFUSE and COOL as additional steps.

That does not mean every session needs all five modes. Begin by choosing one main treatment—LIFT, RF-TI, or A-SHOT—based on the skin concern you want to address. You do not need to use all three in one session. INFUSE and COOL can then serve as follow-up steps, following the recommended sequence for your chosen treatment.

INIA’s website uses the name TIGHTEN for its RF treatment. In this guide, I use RF-TI to match the name reported on my device. [1]

What Comes in the INIA SPHERA Box?

My INIA SPHERA came with:

  • INIA SPHERA device
  • Gold holding stand
  • INIA Hydrating Conductive Gel — 2.11 oz
  • Short USB Type-C charging cable
  • Instruction manual

The gold stand gives the device a dedicated place on my skincare counter, and the included conductive gel lets me get started with LIFT and RF-TI modes.

Who Should Not Use the INIA SPHERA?

According to INIA’s official usage guide, do not use SPHERA if you:

  • Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
  • Have an active electronic implant, such as a pacemaker or neurostimulator.
  • Have had fillers, injections, microneedling, laser treatments, or chemical peels within the past month.

Treatment areas also matter: INIA says not to use the device over the thyroid area, eyeballs, upper eyelids, open wounds, active rashes, eczema, psoriasis, or inflamed skin.

Stop using the device if you experience pain, burning, redness, swelling, itching, or another abnormal reaction.

This is a summary of INIA’s online guidance, rather than the complete contraindication list. Read the current manual before use, and consult your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether the device is suitable for your medical history or skin condition.

Understanding the Five Intensity Levels

The adjustable treatments offer levels from 1 through 5. These are intensity settings, not five different treatment purposes. Level 1 is the starting setting, and it is the level I have been using.

Start with the lowest setting specified in your manual. Adjust only as directed and according to comfort. A stronger sensation does not automatically mean a more effective treatment.

COOL is an exception: INIA’s online FAQ says its intensity is not adjustable. Do not assume every mode has the same level controls. [1]

INIA SPHERA Review: How I Use Each Mode

INIA Sphera Treatment Modes

1. LIFT Mode: My Most Noticeable Muscle- Movement Treatment

INIA Sphere Lift Mode

INIA Sphera (Check Current Price)

What It Is For

LIFT is the mode I associate most clearly with an active lifting sensation. INIA describes it as using EMS to stimulate facial muscles, with the aim of improving skin elasticity and defining facial contours. The mode combines red, blue, and near-infrared (NIR) light, with all lights remaining steadily on during treatment. Use it with conductive gel; I use INIA Conductive Gel in my routine. [1]

How I Use LIFT

I begin with cleansed skin and apply INIA Conductive Gel to the treatment area. I select LIFT at Level 1, then work through three sections:

  1. Left side of the face: two minutes.
  2. Right side of the face: two minutes.
  3. Forehead: one minute.

I move the device in outward and upward sweeping motions. The Sphera beeps when it is time to move to the next section, which helps me follow the five-minute treatment without watching a separate timer.

For the forehead section, the manual recommends moving the device in circular motions across the forehead, from left to right or right to left, for one minute. The outward and upward sweeping motions apply to the left and right sides of the face.

I keep the movements controlled and stay within the treatment areas shown in the manual. The forehead step does not mean moving across the eyelids or directly over the eyes.

What LIFT Feels Like

To me, LIFT feels like it grabs the skin and lifts it. I can feel the muscles twitch, and I can see them move during treatment. Even at Level 1, it feels active.

That is one of the most useful details I can share with someone considering the device: this is not simply the sensation of rubbing a smooth tool across the face.

2. RF-TI Mode: A Stronger Sensation in My Experience

INIA Sphera Tighten Mode

What Is Radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency, or RF, uses electromagnetic energy to produce heating in tissue. INIA describes RF-TI as supporting collagen production to promote firmer-looking skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. RF and muscle stimulation serve different purposes, but the Sphera combines technologies—and during RF-TI, I still experience a grabbing sensation and visible muscle twitching, even at Level 1. This mode uses steady red and near-infrared (NIR) light and should be used with conductive gel. [1]

How I Use RF-TI

I use INIA Conductive Gel and select Level 1. I follow the same section timing as LIFT: two minutes on the left, two minutes on the right, and one minute on the forehead.

I use outward and upward sweeping motions and follow the device’s beeps when changing sections. I keep the head moving rather than holding a heating treatment in one spot. For the forehead section, the manual recommends moving the device in circular motions across the forehead, from left to right or right to left, for one minute.

What RF-TI Feels Like

RF-TI feels similar to LIFT to me, but slightly more intense. In fact, it feels stronger than LIFT even though I am using Level 1 for both. Along with the grabbing sensation and muscle movement, I can definitely feel the device warming my skin during treatment. Afterward, I notice a slight tingling sensation that lasts about 30 minutes.

3. A-SHOT Mode: A Much Subtler Treatment

INIA Sphera A-Shot Mode

INIA Sphera (Check Current Price)

What It Is For

INIA markets A-SHOT as a needle-free treatment designed to minimize the appearance of pores and refine skin texture for a smoother-looking finish. Unlike professional microneedling, it does not use physical needles to puncture the skin. INIA describes its electrical-pulse technology as non-damaging and designed to produce minimal sensation, which helps explain why it feels much subtler than LIFT or RF-TI.

Skin Preparation and Technique

For A-SHOT, I start with clean, dry skin without conductive gel, serum, or other skincare products. My booklet cautions against pressing the device directly against the skin; TJ Tutorials clarifies that the electrode should barely brush the skin’s surface with light contact. Using the tip of the electrode, I gently sweep upward and outward across the left cheek, right cheek, and forehead, making two to three passes over each area.

Focus on areas where pores are more noticeable or skin tends to be oilier, including the upper cheeks beside the nose, chin, and T-zone—the forehead and nose.

According to the booklet, a mild prickling or tingling sensation can occur during treatment. It also notes that a faint burning odor may occur when fine facial hair is affected. This is not permanent hair removal; the hair can regrow naturally. A faint odor should not be confused with a burning sensation on the skin—stop if treatment feels painful or excessively hot.

Instruction note: The booklet supplied with my device recommends following A-SHOT with COOL, then INFUSE. This is the sequence I follow. It also recommends only using A-SHOT 1–2 times per week for pore concerns, allowing your skin time to recover between sessions.

What A-SHOT Feels Like

Compared with LIFT and RF-TI, A-SHOT does not feel like it is doing much to me. There is much less noticeable sensation, without the grabbing feeling or visible muscle movement I experience in LIFT mode.

That subtle sensation does not necessarily mean it isn’t working. A-SHOT serves a different purpose, so I would not expect it to feel like the muscle-stimulating treatments. How strongly I feel a mode is not a reliable measure of its effectiveness. I’m following the manual’s technique and judging this treatment by changes in my skin over time, rather than expecting an intense sensation during each session.

4. COOL Mode: My Refreshing Step Before INFUSE

INIA Sphera Cool Mode

Check Current Price (Normally $233.99)

What It Is For

According to the booklet supplied with my device, COOL is designed to help reduce puffiness and soothe and calm the skin.

COOL is the mode I find especially refreshing. Following the booklet, I use it after A-SHOT and before INFUSE. The booklet also recommends COOL after LIFT and RF-TI to help soothe the skin.

Light operation: The blue LEDs in the cooling area remain steadily lit during COOL mode.

Skin Preparation and Technique

Best used with: Clean skin. No conductive gel, serum, lotion, or cream is required; skincare is optional.

In my A-SHOT routine, I use COOL before applying my serum for INFUSE. If using COOL after LIFT or RF-TI, INIA’s online guide recommends removing any remaining conductive gel first.

The booklet recommends gliding the device across the face in upward and outward motions, or gently pressing it on a single spot for 1–2 seconds before moving to the next area.

COOL mode has a fixed cooling setting, so its intensity cannot be adjusted. According to my booklet, the treatment time is 2 minutes per side of the face and 1 minute for the forehead.

I also use COOL mode in the morning to help reduce puffiness around my eyes, and it has worked well for me. The refreshing cooling sensation is especially welcome when I wake up looking puffy. I keep the device within the treatment areas permitted by the manual, avoiding my eyelids and direct contact with my eyes.

5. INFUSE Mode: My Final Step with Serum

INIA Sphera Infuse Mode

INIA Sphera (Check Current Price)

What It Is For

INIA markets INFUSE as an electroporation-based skincare absorption mode designed to help skincare products penetrate the stratum corneum—the skin’s outermost layer—and support moisturization. It combines amber and near-infrared (NIR) light with vibration, and a skin-contact sensor detects contact during use.. [1]

Skin Preparation and technique

Best Used With: Serum/Lotion/Cream.

For this step, I use INIA PDRN Pink Peptide Serum, which is designed to be used with the Sphera’s INFUSE mode.

INIA recommends pairing INFUSE with water-based serums, essences, or creams. Options include formulas containing hyaluronic acid, peptides, PDRN, or niacinamide. Choose a product your skin already tolerates that provides enough slip for the device to glide comfortably. Avoid pure oils and silicone-based products during treatment, and use caution with strong actives such as retinol or high-concentration exfoliating acids. Compatibility depends on the complete formula, not just its featured ingredient. [1]

I follow the INFUSE instructions for contact, movements, and duration rather than automatically copying the five-minute LIFT routine.

How Often Can You Use the INIA Sphera?

INIA’s current product FAQ gives the following schedule. Confirm it against the instructions supplied with your unit, particularly if your skin is sensitive or your booklet differs. [1]

ModeFrequency listed by INIA
LIFTThree to five times weekly; five minutes per treatment
RF / TIGHTENThree to five times weekly; five minutes per treatment
A-SHOTOnce or twice weekly
INFUSEDaily or as needed
COOLDaily or as needed

This table does not mean you should perform every treatment at its maximum frequency or stack the three main modes in one session. The booklet’s combination instructions matter as much as the individual schedules.

How I Organize the Treatment Steps

My personal routine pairs the selected main treatment with INFUSE and then COOL. For LIFT and RF-TI, I use conductive gel during the main treatment and my serum for the finishing steps.

For A-SHOT, I begin with clean, completely dry skin and maintain the distance stated in my booklet. I then use COOL on clean skin before applying my serum for INFUSE.

Conductive Gel Versus Serum: Why I Use Both

INIA Conductive Gel for Facial and Body Skin

Check Current Price (Normally $34.99)

Conductive gel and serum have different roles in my routine. I use the INIA gel for LIFT and RF-TI, and INIA PDRN Pink Peptide Serum for INFUSE.

Buying tip: You may want to purchase additional conductive gel alongside your device. The included 2.11 oz bottle is small, and you can go through it quite quickly with regular LIFT and RF-TI treatments.

The distinction helps me prepare for each mode. I do not assume that any slippery skincare product is a substitute for the conductive medium required for an electrical or RF treatment.

A-SHOT starts on clean, completely dry skin. I then use COOL on clean skin before applying my serum for INFUSE, rather than applying all my products at the beginning.

A Few Essential Precautions

Start at Level 1 and follow your booklet’s treatment-area diagrams. Avoid the eyes, eyelids, and excluded areas, and stop if you feel pain, burning, or persistent irritation. Check the manual’s contraindications before treatment, particularly for electronic implants. If your skin is peeling or irritated from prescription skincare, ask your prescriber before combining it with the device.

Clean the treatment head according to the booklet after use.

My Early Verdict on the INIA Sphera

The most noticeable feature so far is how different the modes feel. LIFT produces a grabbing, lifting sensation with visible muscle movement. RF-TI feels similar but stronger to me. A-SHOT is much subtler, and COOL feels refreshing after the other steps.

I also appreciate the section beeps. The two-minute, two-minute, one-minute pattern gives LIFT and RF-TI a clear structure, which makes them easier to fit into my routine.

I will update this review with longer-term observations as I continue using it. For now, my experience can help readers understand what treatment feels like and what preparation it involves.

Frequently Asked Questions

INIA-SPHERA-with-glowing-magenta-LEDs

INIA Sphera (Check Current Price)

Does the INIA Sphera Feel Strong on Level 1?

LIFT and RF-TI feel quite active to me at Level 1. My experience does not mean everyone will feel the same intensity, or that stronger sensations are necessary.

Do You Need Conductive Gel for Every Mode?

I use INIA Conductive Gel for LIFT and RF-TI. A-SHOT starts on clean, dry skin, while I use The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + HA Serum for INFUSE and COOL. Follow the product requirements for your specific unit.

Should A-SHOT Touch the Skin?

My booklet says to hold it approximately 5 mm away. The linked INIA blog gives conflicting full-contact advice. Confirm any discrepancy with INIA rather than switching techniques based on which sensation seems stronger.

Do You Need to Use All Five Modes Every Day?

No. The modes have different schedules and purposes. Choosing a suitable routine is more useful than treating every available setting as a daily requirement.

Can You Judge Results by Muscle Twitching?

Muscle movement shows an immediate response during treatment. Lasting cosmetic changes need to be assessed separately over time.

Is This a Long-Term Results Review?

Not yet. This is my early hands-on experience, with longer-term updates planned.
